![]() The two teams first met in the Summer of 2000, also the first year of the MVWL, but then called the Wheeling Wiffleball Association (WWA). On a whim and a guestbook post, the MLY, based out of Flint, MI. and its three core members - Andy Taylor, Phil Bradley and Mike Jones came to Wheeling on a rainy, soggy August afternoon to start what would become THE wiffleball rivalry in all the land. In what is now laughed about, the MLY came out and absolutely demolished the MVWL in game one, as the home team was only used to throwing lob pitches all season. However, the MVWL battled back from a 7-0 deficit to take game two and force a competitive game three before falling 6-4. Despite graduations, marriages and a propensity for binge drinking, the MLY managed to stay in tact and make the trip to Wheeling and win the next four consecutive series. The 2002 series is widely regarded as the best one, when the two teams battled into a seventh game that went into extra innings before Andy Taylor and the MLY outlasted Matt DeSantis and the MVWL. Finally, in 2005, the MVWL captured their first victory in the series in what turned out to be another classic. Despite not having league manager and ace pitcher Andy Taylor, the series also went the full 7 before the MVWL won a 3-2 game to capture their first win. 2006 promises to be a highly fueled, competitive series as the MLY looks to atone for its first loss, and the MVWL is out to prove that it wasn't a fluke. |
